Flag throwing is a magnificent spectacle, which, when accompanied by folkloric sounds, is one of the most solemn and reverent moments of a folk festival. Flag throwers perform their art to the accompaniment of alphorn or bugles at such folkloric occasions as the Alpine carnivals and the yodelling and Schwingen festivals or on the National Day on 1 August. It may be hard to believe but the famous white cross on a red background has only been the national flag of Switzerland since the 19th century. The origins of the flag, though, date back to 1339 and the historic Battle of Laupen, when Confederate soldiers began using the white cross as their field sign. Over time the cantons also added a small white cross to their standards. Eventually, the cross became the military ensign of the Old Swiss Confederacy and could be seen flying above their newly occupied territories. The old Bernese flag probably inspired the choice of red as the background colour. This trivet/potunderlay that can be used for example teapots, pots or pans is hand made from felted wool. Sheep are mainly used in Sweden to keep the fields in shape and the wool is thrown away. Instead the wool is taken care of, washed with a mild organic washing liquid to keep the natural lanolin. The goal in each step of the production is to be as sustainable as possible.
