Our handcrafted collection of cashmere and fine woolen scarves is called ‚Charkha‘, which means ‚hand spinning wheel‘ in Hindi. This is closely connected with Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Indian independence. Gandhi believed that the desire for freedom and social cohesion can be sparked by the sound of the spinning wheel. Through his teachings, he made it a symbol of non-violence, independence and a tool in the hands of the people to lift them out of poverty. Our handmade collection is made in the conflict areas of Jammu and Kashmir. We believe that Gandhi’s philosophy still applies today: local hand-woven works of art and the possibility of selling them on the international market,
Red, the color of this scarf, plays an important role in Hindu customs and rituals. Marriage and the promise to go through life for two are sealed with a red cloth and red accessories. The bride’s first step in the new home is connected with a ritual in which she dips her feet in Alta (red color) and then walks across the floor to herald the beginning of the new phase of life.
